Synopsis

The Language skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing form the core of the curriculum. These skills help in developing the proficiency/language skills of the learners. Learners use these skills to interact with people, obtain information and present information, respond to texts and express themselves creatively. The skills of listening enables learners to listen for key information, then understand and extract relevant information to be used for their needs. Speaking / oral skills will enable learners to communicate their ideas and thoughts clearly in speech using correct pronunciation, stress and intonation.

The skill of reading a variety of texts will enable learners toadjust to the speed and style of their reading to suit the purpose at hand. The skill of reading also enables the learner to skim and scan for implicit and explicit meanings from any given text. The skill of writing enables learners to present their planned/mind-mapped ideas in a logical and organized manner informal, and/or creatively.Grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation are used as language content to enhance the main skills used in the teaching and learning activities. A Certificate in English Communication Skills will be awarded upon completion of all 3 levels and this course would be a good preparation for those whose intending to take IELTS or TOEFL.

Objective

By the end of the course, learners should be able to :

1. Be aware and understand the importance of the English Language in society.
2. Form and maintain relationships through conversations and to correspond relevantly to social interactions and interact to obtain goods and services.
3. Obtain, process and use information from different audio-visual and print sources, and present the information in spoken and written form.
4. Listen to, view, read and demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the nature and processes of a child's normal and abnormal developments.
5. Understand the contribution of the English Language has on an individual and the learning process.
6. Understand different issues and problems faced by the lack of proficiency that students have with the learning of the language.
7. Acquire basic skills in the use of the English Language.

Learning Outcomes

There are three areas of Language Outcomes where Learners learn to incorporate the skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing.From language content, learners are required to perform tasks and achieve outcomes both in oral and written form.
1 Language used for interpersonal purposes. For Example :
a. Making and keeping friendships by introducing oneself.
b. Taking part in social interactions.
c. Obtain goods and services.
2. Language used for informational purposes. For example ;
a) To obtain information for different purposes.
b) Process information.
c) Present the information to different audiences.
3. Language used for esthetic purposes.
a) Listen to, read, view and respond to literacy works.
b) Express themselves creatively and imaginatively.
